Restoration and Recovery After Category 5 Hurricane

Location: St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Hurricane Irma has been recognized as one of the strongest hurricanes on record, causing widespread and catastrophic damage throughout much of the Caribbean and the eastern United States. The Category 5 hurricane’s devastation was further compounded by Hurricane Maria, which affected many of the same areas less than two weeks later.

True North’s large loss response team provided support to numerous communities affected by the hurricanes, including a large resort and hotel located on the island of St. Thomas—particularly hard hit by the hurricanes. True North conducted an evaluation of 12 buildings and more than 300 guestrooms looking for suspected moisture pathways, conducting moisture mapping, and assessing and delineating the extents of water damage and mold growth present. The study’s findings were used in conjunction with a comprehensive building envelope study to develop cost estimates for remediation and restoration. These were then submitted to the insurance carrier to bring the existing facilities back into operation.
